On March 11, 2011, the Tohoku region was struck by one of the most devastating earthquakes and tsunamis in Japanese history—its third major disaster of such scale in this region. On that day, the Land of the Rising Sun lost all light and was plunged into complete darkness.

In truth, it wasn't entirely dark. But, Amid the darkness, Japan saw many lights beginning to shine in the far way distance on globe.

When Japan sank into despair and helplessness, prayers were lit across the globe. At the Magoso School in the slums of Kenya, children prayed day and night for Japan. The USS Ronald Reagan turned its bow toward Japan right away at the moment news of the disaster broke. People around the world sent not only prayers but countless reliefs and also Rescue teams and dogs from more than 30 nations were dispatched to help. ( It was as if a lot of “Spirit Bombs” with energy in the animation of Dragon Ball, were pouring in Japan from every corner of the world.)

Though wrapped in despair and isolation, Japan was not alone. We were receiving “lights of salvation” from across the globe. Japan had long supported global relief efforts, but in 2011, we became the ones who received the most help. And we were truly fortunate.

*Despite being from a disaster-hit prefecture, I felt powerless just watching the TV news in Tokyo at the time of the earthquake and tsunami hit my hometown. In such situation, I am incredibly grateful to the Self-Defense Forces, firefighters from around Japan, US army and rescue teams from worlds, who rushed to the scene. A week after the disaster, I made one day car trip from Tokyo using circuitous route via Niigata and Yamagata to visit my family and relatives in the disaster-hit prefectures. I will never forget the scene of devastated seaside and Self-Defense Forces clearing debris from the coastal roads to keep routes for relief efforts. I would like to express sincere gratitude to all those who supported and endeavored for recovery from the great disaster, also to the E-Gas Station in Niigata, who filled up my fuel tank despite the 10-liter fuel limitation at that time after I explained my purpose, and to T-Rent-a-Car in Niigata, rent me a car despite the headquarters' restrictions to disaster-hit areas, saying my reservation was earlier than their headquarters' notice.

Do you remember “Falkor”, the Luck Dragon from US movie, “The NeverEnding Story”? Falkor helped Atreyu to remember the spirit of “Never Give Up and Good luck will find you”. The original Author, Michael Ende from Germany, stayed in Japan and wrote Neverending Story. He coined the name “Falkor” for the luck dragon, inspired by the Japanese word Fukuryu — the luck dragon.

In today's world, gods, goddess of fortune, or dragons may not exist. But I believe they dwell in our bottom of hearts and appear using our body when we act with courage and compassion in front of people seeking salvation.

When the Great East Japan Earthquake struck, many rescue teams with dogs from overseas rushed to Japan. Many people also offered prayers and a lot of support from across the globe. I felt, it seems that many Falkor (Fukuryu) appeared using their bodies and hearts. For Japan in despair, trapped by the Nothing, Falkor seemed to appear calling out, “Never give up! And the good luck will find you!

14 years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, and memories of this disaster are fading. Then, it becomes all the more vital to pass on memories of this disaster, and also memories of the many prayers & supports & goodwill relay from the world to future generations.

Created this EC site — Awaiting Falkor, to preserve those memories and to convey this gratitude to those who helped us, with data in as comprehensive and detailed a way as possible, rather than fragmentary.

Our hope is that this site would become a small torch in preserving these memories from the world, strengthening the bonds between Japan and the world, and carrying on the never-ending story of goodwill relay.
