Historically, East Japan (Tohoku area) has been hit by three major earthquakes.

The first was the Jogan earthquake in 869. The prayers held at that time for the repose of the dead have continued for over 1,150 years to the present as the Gion Festival in Kyoto.

The second was the Keicho Sanriku offshore earthquake in 1611, exactly 400 years before the Great East Japan Earthquake. The one-eyed Samurai lord Date Masamune, known as the One-Eyed Dragon, overcame three trials with an indomitable spirit and worked hard to rebuild the area.

The third was the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The people in the affected areas responded patiently and orderly amid their grief and worked hard for recovery. I think we got a glimpse of that indomitable spirit and ancient Japanese spirituality in their actions and behavior.

The bonds between Japan and other countries in times of disaster began with Mexico from the rescue of the crew of the Ship of San Francisco in 1609. Japan also has continued to be woven with other countries. Three times "Operation Tomodachi" between the US and Japan have been carried out by each. Since 1987, Japan has carried out 83 overseas disaster relief operations in 49 countries, continuing these Goodwill Relay up to now.
